This food security issue is close to my heart.
In attempts to live a low carbon lifestyle, my family moved to Highland Square because we could walk to everything we needed, school, the Star Market, the Highland Theater, the HS Pharmacy, barbershop, shoe repair, the library, a diner, restaurants, and see live music, all of which we could enjoy without having to drive a car. During our first summer here, the only time we drove my car was to go on vacation. The money we saved not buying gas was great, in fact it paid for most of the vacation.
Since we were able to function fairly well with 1 car, we sold my car, 2 weeks later the Star Market closed. And it hasn't been easy, but we are fortunate enough to still had a car, but for 16% of our neighbors, who do not own one , it was major inconvenience. But the City of Akron and Albrecht Inc. said they would bring back a grocery store to the square. So we waited, and waited and waited.
For the residents involved in the redevelopment who had worked hard to protect our "village within the city" it's been frustrating.
